TCEDC Newsletter - May - Top 100 In The Nation!

Dear Friends,

We hope this newsletter finds you well as we close the vibrant month of May. It has been an eventful year so far, and we are excited to share some updates on the economic development initiatives and achievements happening in Tuscarawas County.

1. Dover-New Philadelphia, Named Top100 Micropolitan: Tuscarawas County has been named one of the Top 100 Micropolitan Areas in the nation by Site Selection Magazine. This recognition highlights Tuscarawas County's exceptional economic development efforts, demonstrating its commitment to fostering growth and prosperity within the region. To celebrate this occasion, the offices of Governor Mike DeWine and Lt. Governor Job Husted prepared a proclamation delivered by Scott Ryan from the Ohio Department of Development on May 24th at the Dover Financial Education Center located at the First Federal Community Bank. Media members, including WTOV 9, were present to report the proclamation.

2. Leadership Tuscarawas: On May 10th, the Leadership Tuscarawas Program held its 20th annual graduation at the Kent State - Tuscarawas Campus. James C. Shively, Director of Business Development for the Tuscarawas County Economic Development Corporation (TCEDC), was among the graduates of the 2023 class. Leadership Tuscarawas is designed to “develop passionate, visionary leaders to strengthen the community.” This eight-month program includes a retreat, various interactive sessions, and tours given throughout the community by key government, non-profit, and private organizations. In addition to completing the Leadership Tuscarawas program this month, James also completed the Ohio Economic Development Association (OEDA) Basic Course for economic development.

3. Workforce Development Initiatives: We understand the importance of a skilled workforce in driving economic growth. That's why we are partnering with the Ohio Manufacturing Association, the East Central Ohio Education Service Center, top local employers in manufacturing, and local education institutions to develop an Industry Sector Partnership that aligns with the needs of our growing industries. These initiatives aim to equip our residents with the skills and training necessary to thrive in the evolving job market. On Thursday, May 25th, we held our second meeting at the ESOESC in New Philadelphia, and we look forward to engaging and growing this partnership. Meetings are the 4th Thursday of each month and email makridge@tuscedc.com for additional details to join.

4. Broadband Improvements: Investing in broadband infrastructure is essential for large and small businesses throughout the county. This helps to ensure long-term success. We are pleased to report that we have submitted an application for grant funding to extend high-speed internet to remote areas around the county. We are still awaiting news on whether we will receive this funding but remain hopeful and optimistic. This grant submission was made possible through the cooperation of our public and private partners, and we eagerly anticipate the economic opportunities it could bring to our region. We have created an ongoing survey for residents to gain feedback from the community about internet connectivity. We encourage everyone to take the survey, which can be found on our website under “community surveys.” TCEDC will continue to look for additional funding for broadband services in our rural areas.

5. Community Engagement: At the Tuscarawas County Economic Development Corporation, community engagement is a priority. We actively participated in various local initiatives in May, including a business roundtable, the Dale Lauren Foland Manufacturing Camp Committee, the Mayors Association, the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District’s (MWCD) 90th Anniversary Open House at the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum, and more. These initiatives foster collaboration and create platforms for businesses, entrepreneurs, and community members to connect, share ideas, and promote economic vitality in Tuscarawas County.

Save the Date - Dale Lauren Foland Manufacturing Camp: Mark your calendars for the upcoming Manufacturing Camp scheduled for July 17th – 19th at the Buckeye Career Center. This camp will feature insightful tours of local manufacturing facilities for incoming 7th and 8th-grade students. They will have the chance to meet industry leaders and participate in interactive manufacturing workshops. More information, including registration details, is provided at dlfmcamp.com.

We want to express our gratitude to our members, stakeholders, and community partners for their continued support and dedication to the economic growth of Tuscarawas County. We are making significant strides and creating a prosperous future for our region.

Please don't hesitate to contact our team with any questions or suggestions. We value your input and look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

Tuscarawas County Economic Development Corporation
