TCEDC Newsletter - Downtown Business Walks

Empowering Growth, Connecting Communities

Message from the Staff

Greetings, Residents and Supporters,

As the leaves begin to change and the promise of fall hangs in the air, we are delighted to bring you the latest news and updates from the Tuscarawas County Economic Development Corporation. Our county continues to thrive thanks to the collaborative efforts of our vibrant business community, innovative entrepreneurs, and dedicated partners. In this edition, we highlight new initiatives and upcoming events and celebrate the remarkable achievements of our local partnerships.

Spotlight on Local Housing

During our strategic planning sessions, we frequently heard local companies express their struggle to find homes for the talented individuals they have recruited to relocate to Tuscarawas County. This issue doesn’t just touch companies working to bring outside talent here. Local residents and families are having difficulty finding homes, and many people who must commute here to work also add to the competition for housing. Like the rest of the nation, housing in Tuscarawas County is aged and in very high demand. We've created a survey on our website to gather information about local housing in the area. We urge you to take the survey and share it with a friend.

We are working with the United States Department of Agriculture's Office of Rural Development and other community stakeholders to improve access to programs that will help address the housing needs of our local workforce. The USDA Rural Development’s mission provides funding opportunities supporting projects and initiatives contributing to strategic economic and community development. Whether you're in the market to purchase a home, a current homeowner who needs assistance making repairs, or a family wanting to build a new home, we encourage you to explore USDA opportunities and stay tuned for updates that will help us drive development in our county.

Downtown Business Support Walks

On August 4th and 10th, TCEDC staff coordinated Downtown Business Support Walks in New Philadelphia and Dover. The goal was to support our downtown small businesses by listening to their challenges and connecting them with people or resources to address those challenges. Both local mayors, city council members, the Chamber of Commerce, the Small Business Development Center, the Business Resource Network, and TCEDC staff talked with 15-20 business owners or managers in each downtown area. The biggest issue in both towns was adequate parking. There is limited off-street parking, and retail customers often struggle to find a spot. Another issue brought up numerous times was communication about special downtown events, such as car shows, festivals, live music, etc. We discussed with local leaders about how to more effectively get the word out about special events in a timely manner. Uneven sidewalks were a concern from some business owners.

Though we couldn’t perform miracles, business owners were very grateful to have their concerns heard. One restaurant owner was so grateful that she bought lunch for the whole group in New Philadelphia. All the participants agreed that this should be an annual event to stay in contact with our small business leaders.

Building Stronger Communities Together

This month, we extend our appreciation to The Dennison Railroad Depot Museum for its commitment to community development. The museum hosted the quarterly Eastern Ohio Development Association (EODA) meeting on August 25th, and they did a great job showcasing Tuscarawas County. Their support enhances our ability to create a thriving environment for businesses and residents alike.
